Hoofdstuk 26Naam in het boek: Final Preparation

Prepare for the exam day

The RHCSA exam (EX200) is fully practical: you get real systems and a list of tasks, and at the end the systems are checked. This chapter gives tips for the weeks before, the registration, the exam day, and a working method for the exam itself.

Check that you are ready

Knowing the commands is not enough — you must be fast and exact without help from the internet.

  • Do every lab in this summary without looking at the solution, on fresh VMs.
  • Do the two practice exams (chapter 27) in the time limit. Score yourself honestly.
  • Practice the hard topics until they are routine: LVM, SELinux, autofs, root password reset, fstab, users and sudo.
  • Learn to use man, --help, /usr/share/doc and man -k fast: they are the only help in the exam.

Onthoud

The official objectives list (on the Red Hat exam page) is the real study plan. Check it again before you book — it can change between RHEL versions.

Register for the exam

You book through Red Hat (or a partner): in a test center, or as a remote exam from home with a booted USB live system and a webcam.

  • Check the current price, duration and rules on the Red Hat EX200 page.
  • For a remote exam: test your hardware with Red Hat's compatibility tool well before the day (camera, microphone, USB boot, network).
  • Book a time of day when you are fresh.

26.3

Know what happens on exam day

Come early, with a valid photo ID. You cannot bring notes, phones or other devices.

  • The proctor checks your ID and your room (remote: with the webcam).
  • You get a desk with the virtual machines and the task list.
  • Read the general instructions first: host names, passwords, repository URLs, which system to work on.

26.4

Work smart during the exam

A clear method saves time and points.

  1. Read all tasks first. Note dependencies (for example: network and repositories before software; a user before its cron job).
  2. Do the tasks that "unlock" others first: network, host name, repositories, root password if needed.
  3. Make every change persistent: enable --now, --permanent, fstab, -P for booleans, files instead of runtime commands.
  4. After each task, check it: systemctl is-enabled, findmnt, id, curl, getenforce.
  5. Do not get stuck: skip a task after a few minutes and come back later.
  6. Reboot before the end (with enough time left!) and check that everything still works — the graders check after a reboot.

Examentip

Typical mistakes that cost points: a service not enabled, a firewall change without --permanent, an fstab typo that stops the boot, forgetting restorecon or semanage fcontext, working on the wrong host, and SELinux left in permissive mode.

Op het werk

Use tools that help: Tab completion, history, Ctrl+R, man -k, and keep a second terminal open with journalctl -f while you configure a service.

26.5

Respect the exam rules

Before the exam you accept a non-disclosure agreement: you may not share the exam tasks. Study material that claims to contain "real exam questions" breaks these rules — and is usually wrong anyway. Learn the skills, not the questions.
