Hoofdstuk 1Naam in de cursus: Overview

See the whole path in one page

This guide is my plan to move from IT Manager to a first job as Cloud / DevOps Engineer with a strong security focus (DevSecOps). It has 5 phases in 12 months. Every phase ends with a hands-on exam and a real project on GitHub. All summaries on this site follow this order.

1.1

Know the goal

The target is a first Cloud / DevOps Engineer role (medior level) within 12 months. Later: Senior or Platform Engineer, then a specialisation: Cloud Security, Platform Architect or MLOps.

The base skills every DevSecOps job asks for:

SkillWhy it mattersWhere I learn it
LinuxEvery server, container and Kubernetes node runs LinuxRH124, RH134, RHCSA
Cloud (Azure)Most companies run in a public cloudAZ-104
Infrastructure as CodeServers and networks are built from code, reviewed and repeatableTerraform
Git and CI/CDEvery change goes through a pipeline: build, test, scan, deployGit, GitHub Actions
Containers and KubernetesThe standard way to run appsContainers, CKA
SecurityBuilt into every step, not added at the endCKS, GitOps
ScriptingAutomate the boring workPython, Bash in RH134

Onthoud

DevSecOps = development + security + operations as one flow. The pipeline builds, tests, scans and deploys; security checks run automatically on every change.

1.2

Follow the 5 phases

One phase at a time. Each phase has a certificate, a course, a book and a project.

PhaseMonthsTopicExamSummary
11 – 2Linux on RHEL 10RHCSA (EX200)Phase 1
22 – 4Microsoft AzureAZ-104Phase 2
34 – 5Terraform, Git, CI/CDTerraform Associate (004)Phase 3
45 – 8KubernetesCKAPhase 4
59 – 12Kubernetes security, GitOpsCKSPhase 5
Year 213+MLOps, AI infrastructure—Year 2

1.3

Use the same method in every phase

Read the official exam objectives first, follow one main course, practise every day, then do practice exams.

  1. Open the official objectives and copy them into a checklist.
  2. Take one main course (★ in the resource lists). Do not collect courses.
  3. Do labs every day, even 30 minutes. Break things and fix them.
  4. Write one summary page per topic on this site, in my own words.
  5. Do practice exams with a timer. Book the real exam only when I score 85 %+ several times.
  6. Finish the phase project and publish it on GitHub.

Op het werk

Free first. Microsoft Learn, the Kubernetes docs, the Terraform tutorials and the Red Hat developer subscription cost nothing. Pay only for the exams and one or two good courses.

1.4

Know what each phase costs

The exams are the main cost. Prices change — always check the official page before you book.

ExamAboutWhen
RHCSA (EX200)$500Months 1 – 2
AZ-104$165Months 2 – 4
Terraform Associate (004)$70.50Months 4 – 5
CKA$445 (one free retake)Months 5 – 8
CKS$445 (after CKA)Months 9 – 12
Totalabout $1,625 (about $1,180 without CKS)

Op het werk

The Linux Foundation has big seasonal discounts (for example in November). CKA and CKS are often sold together for less.

1.5

Track progress every month

Small, visible steps every month keep the plan alive.

  • One certificate about every 2 – 3 months.
  • One project published on GitHub every month.
  • Two short LinkedIn posts every week about what I learned.
  • This site: summaries, command pages and lab notes grow with every phase.

Let op

Teams get smaller because of AI tools. Hands-on work (projects that run, pipelines, clusters) matters more than the number of certificates.
