How to search
  • Plain words find names, texts and examples.
  • "two words" finds the exact phrase.
  • --name or -x finds an option.
  • #word looks only inside commands.
  • @grep finds lessons and labs that use grep.
  • Filters: cat:network · in:labs · in:notes · level:rhcsa · ch:8 · root:yes. Put ! before a word to leave it out. OR between words means one of them.

Chapter 1Name in the course: The map

See all 62 DevOps tools on one map

DevOps job ads list many tool names. This guide puts the 62 tools you meet most in order: what each one does, where it sits in the delivery loop, the commands you use every day, and the habits that keep it reliable. Every tool has a full command page with options and 10+ examples — click the name in code to open it. The security side of the same work is in Most service usage: 65 DevSecOps services.

1.1

Read the DevOps loop

DevOps is one loop: plan, code, build, test, release, deploy, operate, monitor — and back to plan. Every tool has one place in it.

StepWhat happensTools
1. CodeWrite code and config, review in a pull requestgit, gh
2. BuildCompile, install packages, run tasksmake, npm, pip, mvn, go
3. TestUnit tests, the pipeline on your laptopact, make test
4. PackageBuild and move container imagesdocker, podman, buildah, skopeo
5. InfraMake servers, networks and clusters from codeterraform, tofu, terragrunt, pulumi, ansible, packer
6. ReleasePipelines and GitOpsgitlab-runner, jenkins, argocd, flux
7. DeployRun the app on Kubernetes or serverskubectl, helm, kustomize
8. RouteSend traffic, TLS, canarynginx, haproxy, traefik, istioctl
9. WatchMetrics, logs, load testspromtool, grafana-cli, logcli, otelcol, k6
10. OperateDaily work on serverssystemctl, journalctl, ssh, rsync

Remember

The goal of DevOps is to ship small changes often and safely. Every tool here helps with one of those two words.

1.2

Know the 10 areas

The 62 tools in 10 groups. One chapter per group.

1.3

See how DevOps and DevSecOps differ

Same loop, other focus. DevOps asks "is it fast and reliable?", DevSecOps adds "is it safe?" at every step.

At work

Most jobs mix both. Learn this guide for the daily work, then add the security layer from the DevSecOps guide.

1.4

Learn them in the right order

You do not need all 62 on day one. Follow the phases of my DevSecOps path.

  1. Phase 1 (Linux): bash, curl, jq, ssh, rsync, systemctl, journalctl, tmux, nginx.
  2. Phase 2 (Cloud): az, aws or gcloud, cloud-init.
  3. Phase 3 (IaC and CI/CD): git, gh, make, terraform (or tofu), ansible, docker, act, gitlab-runner.
  4. Phase 4 (Kubernetes): kubectl, helm, kustomize, kind or minikube, k9s, stern, promtool, grafana-cli.
  5. Phase 5 (GitOps and scale): argocd or flux, terragrunt, istioctl, k6, otelcol.

1.5

Measure DevOps with the 4 DORA metrics

Teams measure how good their delivery is with four numbers (from the DORA research).

MetricQuestionElite teams
Deployment frequencyHow often do we deploy to production? Many times a day
Lead time for changesCommit → production takes how long?Less than a day
Change failure rateHow many deploys cause a problem?0–15 %
Time to restoreHow fast do we fix a failure?Less than an hour

Remember

Small changes, automated tests, GitOps and good monitoring improve all four numbers at the same time.
